However the work may be done, we consider that the

distances apart of soundings should met exceed about 500

feet. If in certain areas any serious alterations appear

to be in progress, olöser observations should be made. In

addition to taking soundings on fixed lines, observations

of currents, and possibly occasional borings, should be

made.

In a letter dated 25th November, 1920, which our

partner, Bir Haurice Fitzmaurice, when in Hong Kong wote

to The Hon Director of Publia wezke, he stated:-

"The large number of reclamations completed, in

"progress er proposed will no doubt make their influ-

'enes felt in the future by causing some alterations,

"and it is important that a proper harbeur survey on

"standard lines, permanently marked, should be complet-

"ed so that comparisons may be made from time to time.

*I would like to suggest that the staff of the Publie

"Works Department should be increased by the addition

"ef one senior man, socustomed to keeping records of

*soundings, current observations and the other

"different matters which form the history of a harbour,

"and a junior man who would assist him and be an

"understudy".

We do not know whether any setion has been taken

on this suggestion, but if not we should like to repeat it

strongly. There is quite sufficient work for the two men

proposed for a sensiderable time to come.

In the same letter Sir Maurice stated:-

*I would also suggest that at least two self

"recording tide gauges should be erested. I cannot
